Ego Tripping?

Bonjour, Class of 2014:

Remember Nikki Giovanni? She is the author of "The Cyclops in the Ocean," a poem you read when we were working on The Odyssey. If you have not read more of her work, I highly recommend that you do so. However, in the meantime, read your copy of another of her pieces, entitled "Ego Tripping (There May be a Reason Why)". Be sure to hold on to your copy- I have no intention of posting it (as it is quite long) and "I couldn't find my copy of the poem" will not be taken as an excuse if your blog is not posted in time.

After reading this fantastic poem/song, answer the following questions. Remember, the great thing about poetry is that it is SUBJECTIVE, but you MUST BACK UP YOUR THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS WITH EVIDENCE FROM THE PIECE YOU ARE STUDYING. An opinion without backing is like building a house without a foundation- there's nothing to hold it upright.

1. Which poetic characteristics can be found? (And yes, you must provide me with line numbers.)
2. Who is the "I " Giovanni refers to in the poem? (Hint: it's not Nikki Giovanni, but of course you already knew that, right?)
3. What are some supernatural elements in the poem? (No, I not talking ghosts or the boogy man- if that's your only definition of the word, I would recommend a trip to the dictionary.)
4. How does Giovanni bring different religions together under a common respect for humanity?
5. Why do you think Giovanni makes SEVERAL references to Egyptian imagery? (Come on- think back to your world history days and make Mr. Hall proud!)
6. Some of the characteristics in this poem are the same that can be found in hip hop: repetition to create momentum, alliteration, rhythm, rhyme, and linking the ancient world to the modern one. How does Giovanni use all of these characteristics in her poem?

YES, I am asking a lot of questions, and YES, I know that inwardly, you are all grumbling. The biggest recommendation I can make to you is to (you guessed it!) think deeply and critically. If you are willing to go outside of the box, you will find that the answers to these questions are easier to discover than you realize.

As always, some of you have and are continuing to share fantastic posts, and for this, I thank you. For those of you who continue to do the kind of work that makes my eyes roll in the back of my head, I would recommend taking a lesson from those who consistently do well. Coming in second (or third, or fourth, or last) is never something to brag about. Always bring your A game- your blogs are no exception.

Posts are due by Saturday, March 14 at noon (that's 12 PM, in case you were unsure).

Au revoir, my dears-
MC

  3. line 6,8,9,talks about the Islamic god . in lines 2,3,12,14, talks about the Egyptians this shows how the gods work together to active a common goal This poem uses imagery in lines 2,3,4,5,10,11,12,13,14,15,20,21,22,23,24,25,. the person she refers to is her self being in the history of her native country Africa . the supernatural that is in the poem is gods and goddess or a higher power. she applies different religions to a common humanity by saying that all of them are real. i think that she makes so many connections to Egypt because it is the birth place of her history. she uses all of these aspects to relate to the new age and keeping a common ground with kids

  4. I think line 1 is personification because there are factors that show that the line sounds a little funny and poetic. But i can compare this poem to my feelings because for example:I would recommend taking a lesson from those who consistently do well. This a line that everyone should learn from;everything u do will follow you for the rest of your life so take advantage of it and learn from your mistakes by lesson.

  5. Some poetic characteristics that can be found are like in lines 2 and 5 it shows a scense of sight that you can see in your head. Also you have a similie in the last two lines of the poem where it says, “ I mean…I…can fly like a bird in the sky.” You can also see some of the things that the author is talking about in line 22, where it describes hair. When she refers to I he is tlking about mabye Jesus in my opinion because they are talking about how Noah’s Ark was built and how perfect this “I” is. Also she is saying that this “I” is a beautiful woman so this “I” is many things. Some supernatural elements in the poem are this person is perfect and he built the pyramids by himself. She shows things about Jesus and Noah’s Ark and also different religions like the Catholic religion of Rome and much more. She wants you to really think about how this world came to be and what our past ancestors have been through. She uses rhyme sometimes in the poem like me and three. She uses repition of words like gave and I. This poem is kinda confusing to me just saying.

  6. 1.Lines 51 and 52 is a similie and has rhyme.
2.The I in the story is God.
3.When they are talkin about the Sahara Desert.
4.I the story they talk about Noah and his Ark which is Christianity and then they talk about Allah which is Islamic.
5.Yes, because she talks about Nefertiti which is in Egypt. She talks about the river Nile which is also in Egypt.

  7. 1.This poems uses imagery in some of the lines. For example,in line two it says "I walked to the fertile crescent and built the sphinx." 2.The I is the goddes, because it says "I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal, I cannot be comprehended except by my permission." 3.

  8. 1. This poem uses imagery in lines 2,9,16,36, and 52. This poem uses simile in the last line. The poem uses alitteration in line 30(as we sailed on a soft summer day).
    2. The "I"that Giovanni refers to in the poem could be Jesus because he says I I turned myself into myself and was jesus men intone my loving name all praises all praises I am the one who would save, but then again, it says that their oldest daughter was Nefertiti, but the parents of Nefertiti are unknown so the "I" in this poem could be many different people. Giovanni links the ancient world to the modern one by telling about the different religions that there used to be and the religions that there are now.
    3. Some supernatural elements in this poem are "I got hot and sent an ice age to Europe", or "the tears from my birth pain created the Nile", or " My bowels deliver Uranium", or "the hair from my head was thin and three gold continents were laid".
    4. Giovanni brings different religions together by stating facts about Jesus, Nefertiti, Allah, and Noah's Ark.
    5. Giovanni probably makes a lot of references to Egyptian imagery because he talks about pyramids, thrones, Allah(a god), Noah's Ark, and The Sahara desert.
    6. Giovanni uses repition in the last line of every stanza when she says "I am.... Giovanna does not use any rhythm or rhyme scene in his poem though.

  9. 1. This poem uses imagery, For exaple in lines 2,3,4,and 5. 2 says I walk to the fertile crescent and built the sphinx. A simile is in the last 2 lines "I mean...I...can fly Like a bird in the sky.
    2. The "I" that Giovanni refers to in the poem is jesus.
    3. One supernatural element is "I got hot and sent an ice age to Europe to cool my thirst".
    4. Giovanni talks about Noah and his ark and he talks about allah.
    5. Giovanni probably makes several references to Egyptians because the Nile is in egypt and Nefertiti is in Egypt.

  10. The poetic characteristics can be found in lines 2 and 3 which shows touch of the author walking or building a pyramid. There are also many metaphors in this poem like in lines, for example when it said i got so hot it took an ice age to cool him down. The I in the story was like a God or someone with powers.Somethings that was supernatural in the poem was him flying like a bird, or turning his hair to gold.

  11. 1. I think that some poetic characteristics can be found in lines 2 and 3 which shows touch and sight as the goddess builds the pyramid and walks ot the fertile cresent.
    2. The I in the poem is women around the world in the many places that are talked about.
    3. Some supernatural elements are flying and turning onesslef into Jesus.
    4. She brings the religons together by describing them and saying something good about them all.
    5. I think she mentions the egyptian imagery to keep you thiinking about the great pyramids and other things the egyptians did.
    6. I think that she is trying to connect with the new age of life and keeping these historical moments here forever.

  12. [1.] Imagery is the primary poetic characteristic that is used; it can be found in lines 2-3,4-6,8-9,10-11,13-14,16-17,21,28-29,35,40-41,43-44,45,48-50,52. There is also a simile in line 52, which reads: "Like a bird in the sky..."

[2.] The "I" of the poem is the Fertile Crescent itself; everyone and everything in the poem was born in, or is found in the Fertile Crescent.

[3.]Supernatural elements can be found in lines 3,4-6,9,13-14,20,25,30-31,35-38,40-41,42,45-47,48-50,51-52. These include: being several different people, giving an impossible gift to give, having fingernail filings that are jewels, laying gold across continents, and being able to fly.

[4.] Nikki brings several different religions together in this poem as she talks about this "I" Is on the throne of polytheistic Egypt while drinking 'nectar' with Allah, the Islamic god; and talk of Noah and Jesus, two individual mentioned in the Christian faith.

[5.] Throughout history, Egypt is one of the nations that can be found in major events prior to the World Wars. Egypt was also one of the most advanced early civilizations, having built the Great Sphinx and pyramids in such a limited amount of time, something that is still almost impossible to do today.

[6.] She repeatedly uses the word "I" to show the accomplishments of this "perfect," "divine," "ethereal," and "surreal" being that is known only as "I" in the poem.

  13. Some poetic characteristics are found through the whole poem. She creates imagery through the whole poem. You can mostly see in your mind all the things she is talking about. In the last two lines she uses simile to compare that she can fly like the birds. I think when the poem is saying "I" I think she can be referring to our planet earth or God. I say Earth and God because they were the ones the saw all of this historical events that happen on our planet. They could also be the ones that cause these events to happen. Some supernatural elements are where it says" I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal" and " I turned myself into myself and was Jesus". I don’t think anyone in this world is perfect or can be Jesus because if someone was perfect all this historical events wouldn't have happen to our planet and there is only one Jesus. She mentions Romes, Arabs, and Eyptains which all have different religions; they all believe in different "Gods". She makes several references about Eyptains because she could have been part of that culture and religion. The Sarah Desert, Allah, and the Nile are all part of the Eygpt culture,or religion. She repeats I and my alot to make us realize what she accomplished or how the hisortical events happen and thier causes.

  14. Poetic characteristics in this poem include a simile in the last two lines of the poem that says " I mean...I can fly like a bird in the sky." Supernatural elements in this poem come from when she says " I am perfect" part I believe she is referring to GOD and how that perfect someone built pyramids by himself. In this poem the poet uses rhyme and repitition. She brings together different religions by stating facts about Nefertiti,Allah,Jesus, and Noah's ark.The reason I think she mentions Egypt and Egyptians is that she is referring to Moses in the bible who is leading the people out of the wilderness.

  15. 1. In lines 2, 3, 9, and 16 imagery is being used. The last line uses a simile
    2. The I Giovanni is referring to is God.
    3. One supernatural element is in lines 16 and 17;I gazed on the forest and burned down the Sahara Desert. Another is in lines 40 and 41; I caught a cold and blew my nose giving oil to the Arab world.
    4. Giovanni focuses on more than just Christianity. She brings different religions together by speaking of God and Allah.
    5. She makes several references to Egyptian history because the Egyptians are responsible for the world most beautiful and magnificent building ever made, the Sphinx.
    6. She uses imagery to describe how beautiful and perfect God can make things.

  16. In this poem there is metaphor in lines 21, 15, and 30-31. There is also a simile in line 52 and imagery in lines 2,3,4,5,10,11,12,13,14,15,20,21,22,23,24,25.In question two I think the “I” in the poem is the reader because it is written so when you read it, it sounds like it was written for you to read and no one else. In number three there are several supernatural elements like in line 9 were it says that I was drinking nectar with Allah and that is impossible because he is not alive. Other supernatural elements include the ones in lines 13-14, 16-17, 20, 41, 43, and line 51. For number four the author, Nikki Giovanni, includes two religions including Muslim and Christianity. The clues to these two are that he talks about Noah and Allah, Muslim god. The next questions answer is that the author wanted to show what it was like before we evolved and could build buildings easily and almost effortless. She uses rhyme in the last two lines and she use rhythm throughout the poem. For repetition she repeatedly says I. She uses alliteration in lines 19-20, 29, 37, and 45.

  17. This poem has imagery in lines 6,9,and 25.It also has a similie in line 30 and a metophor in line 11.The "I" Nikki Giovani is refering to is different people and different types of nature, like in line 18 it says I turned myself into Jesus and in line 11 it says that she is a gazelle. Maybe she is describing Mother Nature. some supernatural elements in this poem come from line 21 when it describes that her bowels deliver uranium and the fillings are semi-precious jewels. She decribes the Allah and the Arabs and Roman people as everyone living together in the same world.Nikki Giovani refers back to Egyptian imagery to say that they shoud be appritiated for all of their accoploshments like building pyramids and the sphinx.Nikki giovani uses those types of characteristics to better describe what she is talking about.

  18. 1. IN THIS POEM THERE IS FREE VERSE {WHICH YOU CAN SEE THROUGHOUT THE POEM}, THERE IS ALSO A LOT OF SARCASM THROUGHOUT THE POEM/SONG BECAUSE IM PRETTY SURE SOME OF THE THINGS SAID DIDN’T REALLY HAPPEN AND IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN. ALSO ABOUT THE FINGERNAILS AND JEWELS TOWARDS THE BOTTOM, THEY ARE REALISTIC BUT I STILL BOUBT MANY OF THE FACTS STATED.
    2. IN THE POEM THE “I” IS TALKING ABOUT SOME GOD OR GODDESS. OR MAYBE EVEN THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE GOD. BUT IT IS SOME TRUE RULER THAT HAS POWER AND AUTHORITY TO DO MIGHTY THINGS.
    3. SITTING ON THE THRONE W/ ALLAH, CROSSING THE SAHARA DESERT IN 2 HOURS, RECIEVING ROME FOR A MOTHERS DAY GIFT, TURNING INTO JESUS, BEING PERFECT, AND GIVING OIL OUT OF YOUR NOSE ARE ALL SUPERNATURAL BECAUSE THESE THINGS REALLY DOESN’T EXIST AND AREN’T REAL, WHICH TAKES US BACK TO #1 THESE THING DOES NOT REALLY HAPPEN/EXIST.
    4. SHE TALKS ABOUT ALLAH WHICH IS A GOD THAT MUSLIMS BELIEVE IN AND THEN SHE TALKS ABOUT JESUS WHOM CHRISTIANS TEND TO BELIEVE IS THE SON OF GOD.
    5. MANY EGYPTIAN POEMS ARE FAMOUS BECAUSE THE EGYPTIANS LOVED POETRY. THEY DID THINGS TO MAKE THEMSELVES FEEL AS IT THEY HAD AUTHORITY OF MANY THINGS AND THE SPEAKER OF THIS POEM IS SAYING THINGS THAT SHOWS HE/SHE HAS POWER AND AUTHORITY.
    6. SHE USES MOMENTUM BY TALKING ABOUT THE JEWELS AND SHE ALLITTERATION WHEN TALKING ABOUT NOAH BUILDING AND ARK ON A SOFT SUMMER DAY. SHE USES RHYME AND RHYTHM AT THE END WHEN TALKING ABOUT A BIRD THAT CAN FLY IN THE SKY.

  19. There are several poetic characteristics such as Line 2 and 5 as she was using a sight technique for us to see what is like. There is a simile usage in the last two line, "I mean...I...can fly Like a bird in the sky...." Giovanni refer "I" to goddess as she say, " I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal I cannot be comprehended except by my permission". The supernatural in this poem could be a God and Goddess. Giovanni brings several different religious in the story such as Egyptian, drink 'nectar' with Allah, the Islamic god, a conversation of Jesus and Noah, the two individual from Christianity. There were something about in Rome also. Giovanni makes several references to Egyptian imagery about the pyramid she was making, Allah, the Nile river. Giovanni using 'I' many time to make us realize is the God is trying to do something.

  20. 1. STANZA 3, LINE 6 (METAPHOR), AND THE LAST LINE OF THE POEM CONTAINS A SIMILE;(I MEAN...I...CAN FLY LIKE A BIRD IN THE SKY...) THERE IS ALSO ALLITTERATION IN STANZA 5 LINE 3.
2.THE AUTHOR IS REFERRING TO GOD IN THE POEM.
    3. THIS POEM CONTAINS MANY SUPERNATURAL ELEMENTS, SUCH AS: BOWELS DELIVERING URANIUM, HAIR THINNED AND GOLD WAS LAID, FILINGS FROM FINGERNAILS BEING SEMI-PRECIOUS JEWELS.
    4. THE AUTHOR BRINGS DIFFERENT RELIGIONS TOGATHOR BY SETTING THEM TOGETHER IN THE SAME POEM, SERVING THE SAME PURPOSE. FROM MY POINT OF VIEW, SHE IS BRINGING CHRISTIANITY INTO THE POEM BY STATING "I TURNED MYSELF INTO MYSELF AND WAS JESUS.", AND THE RELIGION THAT BELIEVES EVERYTHING HAS A SPIRT BY STATING "I AM A GAZELLE, SO SWIFT."
5.I BELIEVE THAT THE AUTHOR KEEPS MAKING EGYPTIAN REFRENCES BECAUSE EVERYONE IS REPORTED AS TO HAVE ANCESTORS FROM AFRICAN, AND EVOLVED TO OTHER PLACES OF THE WORLD.
    6. THE AUTHOR USES A WIDE VARIETY OF CHARACTERLISTICS IN THIS POEM SO THE READER CAN RELATE TO THE POEM AND RELATE MORE. I BELIEVE THE AUTHOR ALSO DOES THIS BECAUSE SHE DOES NOT WANT THE READER TO HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING THE POEM.

  21. >1< The poetic characteristics can be found in lines 51 & 52 which is a rhyme scheme. 52 also consists of a simile. 41 consists of a personification.

    >2< The "I" Giovanni prefers to is God. It states how he creates the Nile and sits on the throne.

    >3< Some supernatural elements in this poem would consists of line 30-31 41 10 45-47.

    >4< Giovanni brings different religions together under a common respect by talking about Jesus who falls under Christianity and Allah who falls under Islamic.

  22. 1.) Some of the characteristics of a poem that are present are Imagery which I think is used in lines 5&6, you can kind of picture the divine perfect light. 8 and 16 as well. And a simile is being is used in line 52 where it says “Like a bird in the sky…”
2.) I think the I that Giovanni is referring to is Jesus reason why I think this is because, in lines 30-31 it states “I turned myself into myself and was Jesus” then in line 48 where it says “I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal…” Only Jesus and God have the gift to be perfect.
3.) Some of the supernatural occurrences that take place in the poem are in lines 10, 14, 50, 51, and 48. No human can do these things.
4.) Giovanni brings religions together by talking about Europe, Sahara Desert, Rome, and Congo.
5.) Because Giovanni wants to bring a bit of the Egyptian culture into the poem, and to give the readers a look at the different initiatives that the poet went through in creating these certain things.
6.) Giovanni uses these characteristics by combining different portions of her poem to create one big image. For instance, she compares the supernatural with many different metaphors and similes through the rest of the poem. Giving the poem life and most of all meaning.

  23. 1) Lines 5,6,8,&16 are all lines of Imagery. In line 52 there is a simile. In line 21 there is a metephor.
    2) I think it is Mary because in line 10 it states "I am a beautiful woman" then it talks about all of the stuff that she did.
    3) In line 35 it mentions sowing diamonds in their back yard. In line 25 it mentions receiving Rome for mother's day.
    4) Giovanni is able to create a religious virtue by combining the following; Europe, Sahara Desert, Rome, and Congo.
    5) The reasons Giovanni used Egyptian culture is mainly because she wanted to create the images of this in the reader's mind. Basically using imagery in the poem.
    6) Giovanni uses alliteration by using "I" all throughout the poem, and basically it also refers to the repetition. Giving the poem enough momentum to allow the reader to be more interested in the poem.

The supernatural componets of the poem are basicaly talking of giving a elephant and Rome to each other between the mother and son. This story is very good, and I highly recomend it.

    2. The “I” Giovanni refers to in the poem is God, I believe so because people believe god can do no wrong and he is perfect; in line 42 she says “ I am so hip even my errors are correct.” In lines 48,49,50 she says “I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal I cannot be comprehended except by my permission.”

    3. In lines 8,9 it says she sat on the throne drinking nectar with Allah. In line 36 when she states that her bowels deliver uranium.

    4. She brings different religions together by mentioning them in the poem. She says she turned into herself and was Jesus, and she talked about Allah.

    5. Giovanni probably talks about Egypt a lot because a lot of ancient things we know of are from Egypt. Egypt seems like a place with different religions all coming together as one.

    6. She uses alliteration in line 29 when she says “as we sailed on a soft summer day.” She uses rhythm in the last two lines.

  44. This poem uses metaphors in lines 26, 34, 40, and personification in line 41. Also the last line is a simile. I think the "I" in this poem is God, because it says in line 30 I " I turn myself into myself and was Jesus", since God is Jesus I feel its God. In line 6 "giving divine perfect light" is supernatural also the talk of God and Jesus. Lastly, the mention of some of the Greek Gods would be supernatural. Giovanni is trying to say that all this formed the world and our lives wouldnt be the same with out it being the way it is. I think she referes to Egyptian culture because she has a Egyotian background. Finally, I think Giovanni uses all these characteristics to make the different topics flow together even better.

Nikki did use repetiton throughout the poem several times by saying ( "I" to show her feelins of how she truely feel about god!!. It was also a rhyme sceme also going on sometimes throughout the poem and in the very 2 last lines.
